A warm, natural and communicative presence on the podium, British conductor Helen Harrison inspires exciting and compelling performances from the artists she collaborates with from orchestras, opera companies and choirs.  State educated, Helen is passionate about everyone experiencing the transformative power of classical music in all its forms.

Helen is the Music Director for the Young Sinfonia, the Royal Northern Sinfonia’s Youth Orchestra. This season’s debuts include the BBC Concert Orchestra ‘Friday Night is Music Night’, Southbank Sinfonia and Northern Silents Sinfonia. Recent guest conducting includes the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonia Viva.

Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason | narrator

Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason lives in Nottingham and is a former lecturer in English at The University of Birmingham.  Her memoir, House of Music: Raising the Kanneh-Masons, won the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Storytelling Award in November 2021 where it was described as ‘a fresh, moving account of raising children and nurturing their creativity.  It captures what’s sincerely human in classical music-making.’ It then went on to win the the Non-Fiction prize in the 2022 Indie Book Awards, noted as ‘a joyous celebration of the musical talents of the Kanneh-Mason family, which also serves as a window into issues of race and class in twenty-first century Britain.’

Kadiatu is continuing to write and gives talks, interviews and lectures around the U.K. on diversity in classical music, music education, issues of race and inclusion, literature and parenting.

Sinfonia Viva

Sinfonia Viva makes orchestral music accessible to many different people in our home city of Derby and beyond.

You can experience our work in many ways. You can see us playing concerts at Derby Cathedral, here at the Museum of Making, or at the annual Darley Park Concert.

You might take part in one of our creative projects working with our musicians to create original music inspired by your experiences.

Or you could come to one of our family events where children can discover live music through an informal and interactive performance.

However you meet us, we’re committed to combining the highest quality of musicianship with a friendly and personal atmosphere enabling everyone to enjoy and take part in our activities.

Derby Cathedral

Derby Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Derby, and a centre for mission and worship serving the people and parishes of the Diocese of Derby. As well as being a lively place of worship, it is a place of musical and cultural excellence with a flourishing Cathedral Choir, and frequently hosts concerts and events. It is also one of the oldest buildings in Derby City Centre and as a Grade 1 listed building, it is of high historical significance. Derby Cathedral aims to develop strong relationships with all its stakeholders to become a place for inspirational music and worship, learning, heritage stories, arts and culture.
