Introducing Leap Year

Last week, something exciting happened… Three of Sinfonia Viva’s brilliant musicians – Sophie, Gareth and Matt – teamed up with the amazing folks over at MishMash Productions to cook up something brand new, and it’s especially for 7–11 year olds (and their grown-ups, of course!).

This was our very first time working with MishMash – fellow East Midlands creatives who, just like us, are passionate about bringing classical music to everyone. Their mission? To make live classical music warm, welcoming and totally un-intimidating – no stiff seats or hushed whispers here! Just joyful, playful, hands-on music experiences where kids (and adults!) feel right at home.

Together, we set out to create something a bit different. Something that breaks the traditional concert mould. Something bold, brilliant and buzzing with energy. And so Leap Year was born – a vibrant, theatrical concert packed with music, laughter, and more than a few surprises.

The concept is simple: twelve months, twelve mini-scenes, each bursting with its own personality. From the frosty sparkle of January to the sunny hum of July, every chapter has a distinct sound, story and feel – and the music? Oh, it’s fabulous. Some of it was even new to our players!

Back in May, we spent two jam-packed days trying things out – testing musical pieces, experimenting with movement (yes, actual choreography!), and dreaming up themes that would shape the show. Then the players had a few weeks to memorise all the music (no sheet music or stands in sight!) before reuniting in early July for an intensive week of rehearsals, fine-tuning every moment.

One of our favourite parts? The set! The stage is made up of twelve colourful, creative boxes – each one designed to represent a different month. It sounds simple, but remembering where to go, when, and with which prop (some of which may or may not have come from our own kids’ toy boxes…) was probably the trickiest part of the week!

The result is something we’re really proud of. Leap Year is funny, fast-paced, and totally immersive – with audience participation, silly sketches, and moments that’ll make you say “wow!” It’s a show where music meets theatre, where performers chat with the audience, play games, and bring their instruments to life in ways you might never have imagined.

And most of all, it’s a show that puts our musicians front and centre – not just as performers, but as storytellers, characters, and comedians (you’ll see!). It captures the spirit of Sinfonia Viva, but in a completely fresh and exciting way.

So if you’re looking for something fun, engaging and a little bit different to do with the kids – Leap Year is not to be missed. Come for the music, stay for the giggles… and discover how one year can hold a whole lot of magic.
