Beethoven | Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus
Beethoven | Romance for Violin and Orchestra No.1
Beethoven | Symphony No. 1

Conductor | Karen Ní Bhroin
Violin | Sophie Rosa
Special guest | John Suchet OBE

Join legendary newsreader as well as BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM presenter John Suchet for a concert giving you unique insight into the music of arguably history’s greatest composer, Ludwig van Beethoven. If you’ve ever wanted to dip your toes into classical music or get deeper understanding of Beethoven, this concert is for you.

We’re playing three works a young Beethoven wrote around his 30th birthday, before he became famous and at the same time he started to experience hearing loss. His First Symphony demonstrates much about what became unique about his music – including structural and tonal innovations that distinguished his work from composers who came before. We also have his bold Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus – his only full length ballet – and a rare chance to hear the luscious Romance for Violin and Orchestra No.1.

John Suchet has written eight books on Beethoven, including Beethoven – The Man Revealed and most recently, In Search of Beethoven: A Personal Journey. He will host a post-event discussion giving even more insight into Beethoven’s life and music, and why it still resonates today.

What to expect

From 7pm to 8pm we perform the three Beethoven pieces in a short, sharp concert, with unique insights into the music from conductor Karen Ní Bhroin and the musicians.

After a short interval, John Suchet will be exploring the works performed in the first half of the concert within the context of Beethoven’s life. Beethoven’s music has accompanied John Suchet through the best and worst of times. It was with him as a music-loving and adventurous teenager, as a journalist entering Beirut in the grip of civil war, and as he has continued to explore the old cities of Bonn and Vienna, in search of the man behind the music.

Tickets to this concert include John Suchet’s presentation, and you have the choice to stay with us after the interval to fully immerse yourself into Beethoven’s world. The event will finish at approximately 9pm.

We hope you can join us for a really exciting and insightful evening of music and discussion in Derby.
