Head back in time to the Renaissance and Baroque periods to hear sacred music written for cathedrals, churches, palaces, private homes, and the theatre by composers who are still widely celebrated today. The first half of the concert features a series of short and stunningly beautiful choral pieces composed by musicians working in Venice, Spain and England’s own Thomas Tallis. These uplifting choral works are contrasted with orchestral music by Purcell and Flemish composer Leonora Duarte who is widely recognised as one of the earliest female composers of instrumental music. Sinfonia Viva’s Leader, Sophie Rosa, closes the first half of the concert with Vivaldi’s show stopping Violin Concerto in A Minor. After the interval, orchestra and choir are joined by Soprano Fflur Wyn and countertenor William Towers to perform Pergolesi’s beautiful and melancholic Stabat Mater. Written just days before he died aged just 26, it was hugely popular in its time and was celebrated by Jean-Jacques Rousseau as ‘the most perfect and most touching to have come from the pen of any musician’. This music has a distinctive, soulful sound that is perfect for relaxation and reflection. Where better to hear it in Derby than the stunning interior of Derby Cathedral, which was rebuilt in 1725 at the same time as much of this much was first performed? Tickets: £27.50/ £20/ £5 concessions This concert runs for approximately 1 hour 50 minutes with a 20 minute interval. Book Manage Cookie Preferences
