Sinfonia Viva’s exquisite performances of chamber music have proven addictive. This time, it’s a selection of four of the finest and most popular British works for small ensemble. Holst’s infectiously radiant St Paul’s Suite for String Orchestra evokes the Edwardian heart of cosmopolitan London, it’s use of the most hummable folk tunes (‘The Dargason’ from its finale is particular earworm) making it the perfectly vibrant start. Elgar’s Elegy is as melancholic as the title suggests, and romantic sentimentality overflows from Coleridge-Taylor’s moreish miniatures, his Four Novelletten. The cherry on the cake is Finzi’s beloved Five Bagatelles, performed by Sinfonia Viva’s principal clarinettist, Matthew Dunn. Inherently pastoral, distinct characters beautifully emerge from its Prelude to its Fughetta.
