Gareth Humphreys – Section Principal Bassoon

Gareth Humphreys – Section Principal Bassoon

Gareth Humphreys is from Caerleon in Newport, South Wales. He showed an interest in music from an early age, taking up the Clarinet at the age of seven, followed by Saxophone aged nine and Bassoon aged twelve.

As an orchestral bassoonist, Gareth has performed with many of the UK’s top orchestras, including trials for positions in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia, BBC NOW, Royal Ballet Sinfonia and the Halle Orchestra. He is also in demand as a chamber musician, working alongside some of the country’s leading chamber music performers.

He began at the RWCMD as a saxophonist, but after a few months, realised that his future didn’t lie in the saxophone world but as a bassoonist. He graduated with a first class honours BMus degree. Gareth continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama graduating in 2014 with an MMus in Orchestral Artistry.
